Today was very very depressing. We went into the slums of all slums. The kind of town you see on tv commercials. We were just there to visit some people and take a look around. It was really sad. The houses were falling to pieces and people had nothing yet were very generous. I really will remember this day for the rest of my life.
We first went to a youth center. The kids were adorable. We played with them and talked with them about the struggles. Then we went to a senior center. At both places they were selling crafts that they had made. I tried to buy things from everybody and even though I left with a lot of stuff that I really don´t know what I will do with it was probably the best money I have ever spent.
I don´t think I will be able to post much for the next few days. We are heading about 5 hours north of here to a touristy spot. We will be staying at a resort. It seems weird after the day I have had today.
I love you all and miss you! I can´t wait to show everyone pictures!

Dad and I think about you all day long. Then we get home and both turn our computers on....and between the two of us we are checking for your updates every few minutes. Then one of us finally spots the update and calls for the other one to take a look. I don't know how we'll last for a few days without hearing from you! What an unbelievable experience you have had today. I just can't imagine what it must have been like. I am so glad you are taking tons of pictures...but even pictures won't come close to actually seeing it for yourself. Soak it all in...the sights, the smells, the sounds...everything. You're right - - you'll never look at life the same again. Be safe these next few days! LOVE, HUGS AND KISSES! Mom~
ReplyDeleteErika --- thanks for your notes each day. Grampa and I also head for the computer each day to check on news. I probably should've set up a blogspot for our stay up here. I am keeping a journal, but nobody will really ever read that.
ReplyDeleteThe slumbs are really something, aren't they? Like you I've also seen the worst of the worst of them both in Panama and in the Philippines. Its hard to even desribe because its so unbelievable. You're right, it changes our outlook forever. Were you able to take photos of these? I couldn't do it. I'm glad you'll be in a resort tomorrow and will be able to enjoy the day. I'm so happy for you and that you can have this experience. Like your mom said --- soak it all in. Be safe and God bless. grammy R.
